Men's cashmere socks combine cashmere — the fibre from the undercoat of the cashmere goat — with other fibres that make them durable. They provide a silky softness and warmth without bulking up the foot. For everyday wear, the wisest choice is a cashmere blend: it holds its shape better than pure cashmere while retaining that enveloping feel.
Looking for a daily luxury for yourself, or a gift that will be opened with a smile? Here you'll find what to look for on the label, how to choose between long and short styles, how to wash them so they last, and which gift box to choose. The compositions we mention are those listed on the product pages.
Why cashmere on your feet
Cashmere is the fine undercoat of the cashmere goat. Its fibres are much finer than wool: according to capre.it, they measure 11–18 microns, compared to 20–24 for merino wool. The finer the fibre, the softer the hand feel and the less it irritates the skin.
On the feet, this translates into three things. A velvety feel from the very first wear. A light warmth that doesn't force you into wider shoes. A comfort you appreciate on long days, between the office, the train and dinner.
The limitation is wear. The heel works hard, the toe presses, the inside of the shoe rubs. This is why 100% cashmere socks wear out sooner, as we also explain in the guide to choosing men's winter socks. Ciocca has been working with fine yarns since 1912: we know that a beautiful sock must also last.
Cashmere blend: what's really inside
"Cashmere blend" doesn't indicate a fixed percentage. It simply means that cashmere coexists with other fibres. How much is present is told by the label, which is why we check the composition of every product page before writing about a style. Here are the two cases in our selection:
| Style | Composition | What it feels like |
|---|---|---|
| 507 diamond and S50CCU wide rib | 35% wool, 26% viscose, 29% polyamide, 9% cashmere, 1% elastane | Warm and dry hand feel: wool provides warmth and structure |
| S200L and gift box BX200L | 55% viscose, 27% cashmere, 17% polyamide, 1% elastane | Smoother and silkier hand feel, more cashmere, no wool |
Polyamide provides durability at the heel and toe. Elastane keeps the sock fitted to the foot. Viscose gives a silky hand feel. None of these styles is 100% cashmere, and we say so openly: "men's 100 cashmere socks" is a popular search, but for a day in shoes a blend is the most sensible choice. Pure cashmere is better suited to relaxed moments.
Differences from wool and wool-silk
- Wool: elastic, sturdy, thermoregulating. It's the workhorse fibre for intensive use. We discuss it in the guide to the best men's wool socks.
- Wool and silk: a fine sock with a subtle sheen, ideal with lace-ups. You'll find the comparison in the guide to men's wool and silk socks.
- Cashmere blend: the softest, most enveloping hand feel of the three. It's the sock you choose when comfort comes first.
Pure cashmere is a rare pleasure. Cashmere blend is a pleasure you can enjoy every day.
Long or short men's cashmere socks?
Long men's cashmere socks reach below the knee. They are the classic choice with a suit: they stay in place, cover the leg when you sit down and keep the calf warm too. With a lace-up shoe and tailored trousers they are almost obligatory. The 507 diamond and the S200L plain are long styles, in size 40/45.
Short styles, such as the wide rib S50CCU, work well with loafers, derby shoes and a more relaxed look. They are available in three sizes (35/38, 39/42, 43/46), so they also fit smaller feet.
When in doubt, start with long styles: they are the most versatile, from office to evening. If you need an idea for planning your working week, read the guide Back to Work: the right sock for every day.
Patterns and solid colours: diamond 507 and wide rib S50CCU
Solid colour is the safe choice. Black, navy and grey go with everything and never tire. A pattern is the detail that gets noticed when you cross your legs.
The 507 diamond is an intarsia, not a print: the pattern is knitted into the fabric. It is a long sock, available in black, navy blue, beige or grey, at €14.95. Its cashmere content is 9% of the yarn, alongside wool and polyamide: a warm, full sock, suited to flannel or tweed.
The wide rib S50CCU is a short sock, in black or navy, at €12.94. It shares the same yarn as the 507 and features a subtle vertical pattern, ideal for those who want cashmere without drawing attention to it.
How to wash cashmere socks
Cashmere is less fragile than it seems, but it does not forgive heat or friction. There is no need to wash it after every wear: after taking them off, let the socks air for a few hours before putting them in the laundry basket. When it's time to wash them, a few rules — always the same ones:
- Read the label on your style: it is worth more than any general advice.
- Hand wash or machine wash at 30° on a delicate cycle, using a neutral detergent for wool and delicate garments.
- Turn the socks inside out and place them in a laundry bag: friction with the drum is the first enemy of knitwear.
- Avoid bleach and fabric softener. Cashmere does not need them.
- Do not wring or spin at high speed. Press the sock between two towels to remove the water.
- Dry flat, in the shade, away from radiators and without a tumble dryer. Heat weakens the fibres and the elastic.
How to prevent pilling
Pills, known as "pilling", are small fibre balls that form where there is friction: the heel, the toe, the inside of the shoe. With fine natural fibres they are normal and not a defect. They can, however, be reduced.
- Alternate several pairs so the fibres can rest between wears.
- Always wash inside out and in a laundry bag.
- When they appear, remove them with a lint remover or a cashmere comb. Do not pull them off with your fingers: you would snag the yarn.
With this routine, a cashmere blend sock stays soft season after season.
The perfect gift: the 3-pair cashmere blend gift box
For the man who has everything, cashmere socks are a luxury that is genuinely used every morning. The 3-pair cashmere blend gift box (BX200L, €70.96) contains three pairs of long solid-colour socks, already packaged. The listed composition is 55% viscose, 27% cashmere, 17% polyamide and 1% elastane. The price is slightly lower than three S200L pairs purchased individually at €24.95 each.
Two colour combinations to consider:
- Black, navy blue and grey: the three colours that cover the whole working week. The safe choice for those who don't want to go wrong.
- Dark brown, terracotta and taupe: for those who love brown shoes, tweed and the warm tones of winter.
If instead you're looking for something more playful for Christmas, there are the long Christmas socks SN003 (€25.95) in cashmere blend, with a Nordic red motif featuring reindeer, fir trees and Father Christmases. They are designed for a casual look. Check the composition on the product page before purchasing.
Embroidered initials and personalised cashmere socks
Those searching for personalised men's cashmere socks or men's cashmere socks with initials are looking for a gift that bears the name of the recipient. Ciocca's personalisation consists of an embroidered monogram at ankle height, which remains discreet beneath the trouser leg and becomes visible when you cross your legs.
In the catalogue, the wide rib S50CCU is marked as customisable. On the product page you can check whether the embroidery option is available for the chosen colour and size. How it works, which fonts and colours you can choose, is explained in the guide to socks with embroidered initials, dedicated to Fil d'Écosse but equally valid as a reference for the service.
A practical tip: if the gift is for Christmas, order in advance. An embroidered piece takes a few extra days compared to a standard order.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions about men's cashmere socks
Pure cashmere does: rubbing and friction wear down the heel and toe quickly. Cashmere blend, with polyamide and other fibres, is much more resistant. With gentle washing and flat drying it lasts a long time, though some pilling with use is normal.
It depends on how often you wear them and how you wash them. Alternating several pairs and washing them inside out at 30° or by hand extends the life of the knitwear. There is no guaranteed lifespan: care makes all the difference.
They warm without weighing down and you don't need wider shoes. If you work in very heated environments, choose a long style and alternate with a Fil d'Écosse sock: cashmere is for cold days.
Yes, but they are more delicate and wear out sooner. All the styles in this guide are in cashmere blend, with a cashmere content ranging from 9% to 27%, as stated on the product pages.
By hand or in the washing machine at 30° on a delicate cycle, inside out and in a laundry bag, with a neutral detergent. Do not wring them, do not use a tumble dryer, and lay them flat to dry in the shade. Always check the label.
Yes: in the catalogue the wide rib S50CCU is marked as customisable. Check the option on the product page and read our guide to socks with embroidered initials to choose your font and colours.
