Combing, mercerisation, gassing

Combing removes short fibres and impurities: the yarn becomes compact, parallel, less prone to pilling. Mercerisation makes the fibres more cylindrical and gives that discreet, almost silky lustre that is the hallmark of a fine sock. Gassing passes the yarn through a flame: it burns away the surface fuzz and leaves a smooth, uniform surface that glides between the fingers.

The unwritten rules (but always valid)

Office style has few rules, and almost all of them concern details that are only noticed when they are wrong. Small gestures that make the difference between a polished look and an unforgivable mistake.

What a serious work sock must have

A short checklist, without marketing. A terry sole cushions the rigid sole and reduces peak pressure under the forefoot. Moisture management cannot rely on cotton alone: merino wool or technical fibres are needed to move sweat away from the skin.

Reinforcements go on the toe, heel and instep — the points where the PPE rubs. Flat seams prevent blisters at the toecap. An elastic arch support keeps the sock in place, without folds. The height must exceed the upper edge of the boot: otherwise the shaft of the shoe works against bare skin.

Three mistakes we still see too often
